Summertime is active time. With the weather finally agreeable – for those of you outside of Las Vegas or Phoenix, “spring” actually means “winter lite” – many people are in the Great Outdoors. From sports to picnics to graduation parties to vacations, there’s a near-endless variety of things to do in the summer.
In order to ensure your summer is both happy AND healthy, we’ve come up with a list of summer safety tips to keep in mind.
Beware extreme heat. You see it all the time on the news – someone leaves a child or pet in the car with the windows up, resulting in injury and / or death. Just remember to check and double-check your car before leaving.
Shelter yourself from the sun. We’re not saying to totally avoid the sun like a hermit, but some common sense action is in order here. If you’re going outside for an extended period of time – say, for at least 2 hours – apply sunscreen (at least SPF 30) to exposed area. Hats and light-colored, loose-fitting clothing can also help. Skin cancer rates are on the rise, and these simple acts can help prevent it from happening to you.
Tell bugs to buzz off. While we’re talking about spray, it’s also a good idea to keep a can of bug spray on hand for camping trips, backyard cookouts and other outdoor gatherings. Mosquitos and other pests can turn summertime fun into an itchy, maddening mess.
Keep your food fresh. Picnics, barbeques, family reunions – summer means plenty of outdoor eating. Make sure cold food is kept in plenty of ice. Give your grill a thorough cleaning before use to prevent foodborne illnesses. And if you’re having some adult beverages at your gathering, keep plenty of H2O on hand.
Keep first aid kits in your home and cars. Bandages, ointments, gauze, aspirin – summer puts added stress on adults and kids alike. You never know when something will go awry, so be prepared wherever your summer fun takes you.
