The best urgent care centers combine the considerable resources of a hospital emergency room with the prompt, attentive service you’d expect from a primary care physician. That’s a major factor in the rise of urgent care medical facilities throughout the country.
Accidents and emergencies are always a given; combine the ever-growing youth sports participation rate (especially in sports like soccer), and the need for individualized, on-point care has risen tremendously in the past generation. Urgent care centers (UCCs) have filled the void.
Well, some UCCs have. Just because a facility is marked “urgent care center,” that doesn’t mean it’s the right place for you. The important thing to remember is this: not all urgent care facilities are the same. Just like all ER centers don’t offer identical levels of care and service, urgent care centers can vary in their on-site technology, staffing, and quality of care.
Some UCCs – like Banner Urgent Care, for instance – are simply better suited to handle real-life emergencies. What sets certain urgent care facilities apart from others? It’s a matter of service and solid medical credentials.
Before considering an urgent care center, ask yourself the following questions:
Are onsite x-ray machines available?
You may not think you require an x-ray, but often times an emergency requires this common medical procedure. Make sure your UCC has at least one x-ray machine.
Who will examine me?
While some UCCs have limited personnel, you want the comprehensive attention to detail from a nurse practitioner / physician’s assistant AND a medical doctor. You’re going to an urgent care center, after all, because you need attention now – Don’t settle for less than you deserve.
What about blood tests?
Similar to the pharmacy availability, a UCC able to provide blood tests has a huge advantage over other facilities.
Is the service urgent AND ongoing?
When getting medical attention, you should feel like the most important person in the building. And that should extend beyond your immediate emergency needs. If your UCC shows a willingness to follow up with regular checkups, physicals and other routine medical care, you’ve come to the right place.
